GADWALL Mareca strepera

Another abundant duck in the northern hemisphere, recently taxonomic changes have resulted in a new genus Mareca, containing Wigeon, Gadwall and Falcated Duck. Not universally agreed upon, but a useful treatment with regard to the formerly "catch-all" genus of Anas. Gadwall uses vegetated water bodies as do many ducks, and is primarily a dabbling duck. After breeding forms flocks on lakes and estuaries but usually away from coasts. Northern populations migrate south but rarely reach the equator , birds from more temperate zones are resident.
