FALCATED DUCK Mareca falcata

Breeding mainly in Eastern Russia, this uncommon species is also found in surrounding areas of China and Mongolia and also Japan. The majority of the population seems to winter in China. Vagrancy occurs, usually accompany Wigeon flocks, and there are several records in the UK. However until 2019 these were always deemed escapes, since such an attractive duck is popular in collections. A review then afforded several records category A status retrospectively, including the bird on the left taken in Lincolnshire in 1995. The first accepted record dates from late 1986. Other photos are captive.
