NORTHERN SHOVELER Spatula clypeata

The most abundant Shoveler, widespread in the Northern hemisphere where it is the only shoveler. Usually found in pairs or small parties, it breeds across most of northern Eurasia, including the UK, and from Alaska across much of the US and Canada. Less wary than other shovelers, it disperses south almost to the equator in places, and vagrants have occurred in polar regions, oceanic islands and southern Africa. It is monotypic, all photos taken in the UK.
