TIBETAN SAND-PLOVER Anarhynchus atrifrons

Both "Lesser Sandplovers" have been recorded in the UK, Tibetan only twice but it was probably seen by more people, the record shot is of the Rimac bird in 2002, which was a female. Breeding in Central Asia, Mongolia, Tibet, the Himalayan, Pamir and Tien Shan regions, birds winter from East Africa to South-east Asia on coasts and large lakes, and on most Indian Ocean Islands. Confusion was caused in the past by the use of the term "Mongolian Sand-plover" which was applied to the atrifrons group. Most of the subspecies involved have become Siberian Sand Plover but never bred in Mongolia.
