SQUACCO HERON Ardeola ralloides

A pond-heron, its affinity with others being shown in the immature plumage. It is common in many parts of southern Africa and Eurasia as far east as Afghanistan, especially around the Mediterranean. A frequent overshoot to Northwest Europe including Britain, especially in spring, climate change will probably result in a breeding attempt before too long.
