SPECTACLED EIDER Somateria fischeri

Very difficult to see in the wild, the only easily accessed area is Alaska, which remains on the bucket list. The bulk of the population breeds in Siberia, there is interchange between that and the Alaskan population, but numbers seem to be falling everywhere, and it is a difficult species to survey accurately. The whole population is thought to winter in an ice-free area of the Bering Sea, and climate change will further threaten the species. Very rare in captivity, I was lucky enough to photograph these birds in England.
