LESSER SCAUP Aythya affinis

In contrast to the previous species Lesser Scaup is monotypic, and breeds almost exclusively in the boreal taiga of Canada and the USA. Birds winter to the south as far as southern Mexico, indeed the left hand bird was taken in Bermuda, and again usually near coasts. Distinguishing from Greater Scaup and hybrids is problematic, but since the first (in 1987) birds have become quite regular in the UK, where the other shots were taken.
