PLUMED WHISTLING-DUCK Dendrocygna eytoni

Both this and the next species are found commonly in Australia, plumed is an endemic. The range within Australia is large, but varies according to the weather conditions, as the birds favour treeless grasslands with some water, which may not be permanent. They are largely nocturnal feeders, and may fly quite large distances between daytime roost sites and feeding areas. These birds were all taken in Northern Territory, birds are absent from the south west and Tasmania, although vagrants have been reported including one in New Zealand.
