LONG-TAILED DUCK Clangula hyemalis

A monotypic genus, circumpolar in its breeding distribution on Arctic tundra including coasts of Greenland. It is a medium distance migrant, although some birds only move to adjacent coasts. Wintering mainly at sea it is often found off UK shores, also rarely inland. Both breeding and winter plumages are quite striking, sadly intermediates seem to be the norm, due to complex protracted moults, of which there are two annually. Added to sexual dimorphism there are several distinct plumages, which may at times all be present in one flock.
