BUFFLEHEAD Bucephala albeola

Related to Goldeneyes, a common breeder over most of Canada and Alaska, with a few isolated populations in western USA. The more northern populations migrate south as far as Mexico, others move to Pacific coasts. For many years birds in the UK were considered escapes, but now there are about thirty accepted records, some of these were taken in Yorkshire. Vagrancy to Japan and other areas of eastern Asia is apparently more common.
