LESSER WHISTLING-DUCK Dendrocygna javanica

An abundant and widespread species replacing Wandering to the east and north. The range encompasses the Indian subcontinent and parts of southern China, birds formerly found in southern Japanese islands seem to have disappeared. Found in small parties on lakes and marshes it frequents vegetated fringes, in some areas it has become a perceived pest in rice paddies, although it's benefits in consuming insects probably outweigh other factors. Photos were taken in Sri Lanka and Goa, except the centre bird which was in captivity.
