CAPE SHOVELER Spatula smithii

Like all shovelers, this species frequents shallow bodies of water, often brackish, and is somewhat local in its limited distribution which covers South Africa and Botswana. Dispersal within the region results in records in adjacent African countries, especially Namibia, where it breeds rarely. I have never managed a decent photo, although there are undoubtedly some in captivity, this record shot was taken off the Cape in South Africa.
