NEW ZEALAND KING SHAG Leucocarbo carunculatus

Endemic and listed as Vulnerable, with less than 1000 birds, this taxon is similar to other Leucocarbo shags in the area and is again sedentary, with a few records on nearby coasts of North and South Islands. It has recently been split(!) but the other taxon, Kohatu Shag, is extinct. No more than five colonies are known, all on rocky islets, although the population remains stable. Formerly known as Rough-faced Shag, it is easy to see on boat trips in the area, which we did some 20-odd years ago.
