BLUE-FOOTED BOOBY Sula nebouxii

A fairly range-restricted Booby, breeding on coastal cliffs and islands discontinuously from the Gulf of California to N.W. Peru, and Galapagos. The distinctive blue feet vary in hue, this enables selection of the healthiest males since the pigments are obtained from the diet. It lessens with age and if a bird is not well-nourished it rapidly fades. About half the breeding pairs are on Galapagos, but the population as a whole is in decline, probably due to fish stocks.
