SPOON-BILLED SANDPIPER Calidris pygmaea

One of the most enigmatic waders in the world, and probably one of the most photographed. Despite its critically endangered status, birds have usually been easy to see in ones or twos, simply because they are an added "plus" to a birding trip to Asia. Currently Thailand is the easiest place, although for many years we had seen two birds distantly at Mai Po, in Hong Kong, one of which appeared here as a record shot. It was my second visit, an earlier trip had "dipped" since the birds used to winter on vast mudflats and didn't always come in on the rising tide. However I was recently in the enviable position of being able to get some decent photos, without it being a target bird for the tour.
