TAIGA BEAN GOOSE Anser fabalis

Bean Geese have always been winter visitors to the UK from their widespread Eurasian breeding ground, but have been split for a few years now. Taigas breed in the taiga belt from Scandinavia to Eastern Siberia. There used to be two sizeable flocks wintering here, one in Norfolk, the other in Scotland. The Norfolk one has gone, although odd birds do occur every year, and the Scottish birds are greatly reduced. Odd ones or twos still occur in many parts of England, but there is no real pattern, and they remain the rarer of the two. These birds were taken in Finland, probably on migration.
