A species group which has long been the subject of taxonomic controversy, there being up to five potential species. This is obviously the Eurasian stilt,
but should we not at least be considering Black-necked Stilt, from the Americas? All populations breeding in temperate regions are migratory, and there are now several breeding records from the UK. Vagrancy
is common, including American populations, so could the vagrant at the far tip of Cornwall in October not be a Black-necked Stilt? However, I think the bird illustrated is a Black-winged, but
are we overlooking a species?
