SUBANTARCTIC SNIPE Coenocorypha aucklandica

This and its close relative Chatham Snipe are thought to be primitive snipes and are confined to subantarctic islands off New Zealand. Although the plumage is somewhat similar to other snipe, they have a totally different jizz which is very apparent in the field, as well as being small. Behaviour is similar, but patient stalking resulted in a close enough approach to get this photo before the bird disappeared in the vegetation once more.
