MOUNTAIN PLOVER Charadrius montanus

Subtly attractive in breeding dress, these birds are commonly seen in their winter quarters in California and Arizona, but are endangered and numbers are low. Quite plain until they reach their breeding areas, which are upland grasslands (this is where the name originates, not actual mountains). Pawnee National Grasslands is where many birders go, these were in a small town just south of there.
