MADAGASCAR PLOVER Charadrius thoracicus

Another Madagascan endemic which is becoming increasingly rare due to loss of habitat, it seems to be closely related to both Kittlitz's and St.Helena Plovers. The former seem to have colonised Madagascar after its initial isolation, it may be that they are now competing with the endangered birds for both food and breeding habitat. Certainly they were both found together where these birds were photographed, on short grassland near water.
