COMMON GULL Larus canus

Widespread across the Northern Hemisphere but rarely abundant in the way some other species are. In the states it was known as Mew Gull, until a recent split resulting in a change to Short-billed Gull. Three subspecies occur, Kamchatka Gull has been mooted as a seperate species, as has the northern asian race heneii. That viewpoint seems to be out of favour currently, but who knows?
