Two examples of the aforementioned (sub)species. As well as the bill being yellow, there also seems to be much variation in size and shape. The adult bird here has a bill shaped more like an Elegant Tern, whereas the flight shot, albeit a young bird, has a short bill. Intergrades with Sandwich do occur in a cline, so it may not be a good species. |
