BLACK-FRONTED TERN
Sterna albostriata
A New Zealand endemic breeding along dry riverbeds, this attractive tern is closer to Marsh Terns in many ways. Although still classified as a Sterna, it has been suggested that it is closely related, or even a race of, Whiskered Tern. Like Marsh Terns it feeds by hawking insects etc., but is not migratory and although dispersing in winter never occurs outside New Zealand.
