AMERICAN HERRING GULL Larus smithsonianus

A recent split from Herring Gull still not accepted by some authorities, or placed with Asian taxa. The bulk of the population breeds in the north-east and Canada, wintering patchily to the south, so it is not always a "given" on a trip to the US.Juvenile plumage is the most distinctive, many older birds may be overlooked in Britain, as numbers would suggest more frequent occurences.
