TORRENT DUCK Merganetta armata

A monotypic family with three subspecies, the males of which can differ quite dramatically. Females are all similar, as shown in the photos. A duck of fast flowing rivers throughout the Andean chain, just reaching Venezuela and as far south as Tierra del Fuego, wherever there is suitable habitat. Unfortunately males have a tendency to flush easily, so no photographs, the females were taken in Chile.
