LAKE or ARGENTINE BLUE-BILLED DUCK Oxyura vittata

A lowland breeder in southern Argentina and Chile, but not found on Tierra del Fuego. Widespread but usually in small numbers, despite similarity to the previous species causing identification problems, it is more closely related to the blue-billed ducks of Australia and Africa. There are a few records of vagrancy, to the Falklands among others, but only in extreme drought conditions on the mainland about a century ago. The bird on the main page and the one to the left were taken in Argentina.
