BLUE-BILLED or HOTTENTOT TEAL Spatula hottentotta

A small duck, found on well-vegetated waters mainly in East and South Africa but also in parts of West Africa and Madagascar. Small parties seem to be the norm, although a few post-breeding larger flocks on more open water have been recorded. Until recently it was known as Hottentot Teal, the term has gradually been determined as offensive among some Africans, but unfortunately the new name, whilst accurate, invites confusion with Blue-billed Duck or Blue-winged Teal. The intensity of blue is variable, being less in females and possibly varying with breeding status. Apart from one captive shot (RH) these were taken in Ethiopia.
