HARLEQUIN DUCK Histrionicus histrionicus

One of the most colourful ducks, a monotypic genus which unusually has no records of hybridisation. Breeding on turbulent, fast-flowing streams and rivers in disjunct populations in Eurasia and North America, birds move to nearby coasts to winter. However, there has been a number of records in the northern UK, of which the left hand pair is one, in Scotland, The Hebrides and Shetland. Only two records have been accepted in England, the last in 1915-6, others are "not-proven".
