FRECKLED DUCK Stictonetta naevosa

An abberant duck in a monotypic family, thought to be more closely related to swans and geese than other ducks. Found only in Australia it is nomadic and breeds at all times of year in response to rainfall, and at times has been found all over the country, but only as a vagrant in Tasmania. In several visits to OZ we have only ever seen one, in Queensland where it is infrequent, thus photos are taken in captivity. Numbers are low, and unfortunately it is hunted "by accident" since most hunters aren't able to distinguish it from Grey Teal (if they even try).
