The familiar taxon in the UK, "our"
birds breed mainly in Spitzbergen, although others do so in N.E. Canada and Greenland.
Eastern USA, Ireland and parts of Europe hold wintering flocks, there is a tendency
in England at least, for non-breeders to remain throughout the summer, whether this
will lessen with global warming remains to be seen.
