COTTON PYGMY GOOSE Nettapus coromandelianus

The smallest of all widfowl, widespread throughout tropical Asia, and also found locally in northeast Australia, described as a separate race. Found on more open water than the previous species, it otherwise shares similar habits, although it is not so dependent on the prescence of water lilies. Largely resident, some populations are dispersive in the wet season, resulting in regular records from as far west as Oman, and vagrants in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Australian race, which are the birds shown here, is declining and may number less than 1500 birds.
