COMMON POCHARD Aythya ferina

Widespread and fairly abundant in a band across Central Eurasia, from the UK to Central China. Outside of this general area are a few isolated populations in Japan, Tibet, Turkey and the Mediterranean. Birds winter to the south, Spain, East Africa and India, but males and females have different moult strategies, migrate at different times and to different regions. The flock, taken at Welney, is almost exclusively male, although there are a few females around. Most photos were taken in Norfolk.
