SOUTH AFRICAN or CAPE SHELDUCK Tadorna cana

Similar to the previous species but with a grey head in the male and more dimorphism in the female with its dark grey and white head. Similar in habits to other shelducks, pairing for long periods, although females outnumber males and will compete for unmated males. Largely breeding in Namibia and the Cape, birds disperse to form moult flocks over much of South Africa. Although relatively common they are usually met with in pairs, not being particularly tame the only wild shots I have were taken in Namibia in flight, the others are captive birds.
