CAPE BARREN GOOSE Cereopsis novaehollandiae

A primitive goose with its own genus, bulky with an extended cere covering all but the tip of the bill, quite unlike most other geese. Restricted in range to southern Australia, most breeding is on small offshore islands, especially in the Bass Strait and off the Recherche Archipelago (a distinct subspecies). Outside the breeding season birds disperse to mainland Australia and Tasmania, they have increased in numbers over the last forty years.
