CANVASBACK Aythya valisineria

Widespread and fairly common in North America, but breeding mainly in eastern Canada and Alaska, with a few records as far south as California. Birds winter to the south, often coastally, and as far as southern Mexico. There are numerous records of vagrancy, including six in the UK, several of which returned in susequent winters. The photos here are all of the first accepted record, at Welney WWF in 1997. Wary in its first year it became quite tame the next year, following Pochard in to feed. A 1996 record was accepted later, but strangely the last record was in 2002. Although I've seen them in the US I've never photographed any.
