BLACK SWAN Cygnus atratus

An abundant species over much of Australia, sometimes in huge flocks, but rare in northern areas and western interior. It was introduced into New Zealand in the 19th century, and is now found commonly there in suitable habitat. Familiar also to UK birders since, being an antipodean version of "our" swans, both in plumage and distribution, numbers have been kept in collections. Some of these have obviously escaped on occasion, and a feral population is increasing. Whilst most of my shots were taken in Victoria, the right-hand bird here is at Frampton Marsh in Lincolnshire.
