AUCKLAND TEAL Anas aucklandica

Two species were split from Brown Teal, both being found on subantarctic island groups which give them their names. This taxon is not found on Auckland Island itself because it is not predator-free, but most other islands in the group have had cats, rats and goats eradicated which has improved population numbers and led to a status of near-threatened. Very similar to Brown Teal but shows more green in the plumage. These shots were taken on Enderby Island where birds forage in the kelp beds and are quite approachable. The second taxon is Campbell Teal, found on Campbell Island and Whenua Hou, which is vulnerable. When we visited Campbell we were unable to find one.
