SPOTTED SHAG Phalacrocorax punctatus

A New Zealand endemic, found on all three islands, although North Island poulations are in decline. Stewart Island and birds from the southermost part of South Island are considered a different race oliveri, and apparently have a narrower neck stripe. They were considered a different species at one time (Blue Shag). Breeding is on sea cliffs and they are rarely found inland. Large colonies are the norm., and there is some slight dispersal in the non-breeding season.
