ROCK SHAG Leucocarbo magellanicus

Now thought to be the basal Leucocarbo, this monotypic shag breeds from south-central Argentina to south-central Chile, plus the Falklands and Tierra del Fuego. Primarily coastal and sedentary, there is some dispersal north, mainly on the Atlantic littoral where it has been recorded in southern Brazil. Small colonies are the norm, and whilst adults are unmistakeable, immatures are polymorphic, and odd variant adults occur with white on the upper breast and throat. Formerly known as Magellanic Cormorant.
