CROWNED CORMORANT Microcarbo coronatus

The only Microcarbo which is exclusively coastal, it is found from northern Namibia to the Cape, usually on rocky shorelines. There are three restricted-range Cormorants in the area, but the others are much larger. The "crown" from where it gets its name is a small tuft of feathers, often absent outside the breeding season. Whilst the total population is quite small, it appears to be stable.
