CRESTED AUKLET Aethia cristatella

Very common, if not abundant, over the North Pacific, forming huge colonies and wintering at sea over a somewhat larger area to the south. Huge flocks may be seen at sea anywhere from the Kurils to mid-Alaska, the largest colonies are in the Sea of Okhotsk but the Aleutians and the Pribilofs also hold large numbers. This and the next species both have the distinctive forehead crest and a grey underside, whereas all other auklets have white undersides to a greater or lesser degree.
