ASCENSION FRIGATEBIRD Fregata aquila

Until recently only breeding on Boatswainbird Island, off Ascension Island, which in itself is a small "dot" in the South Atlantic. It has recently (2012) re-colonised the main island after the eradication of feral cats, but still remains listed as vulnerable due to there only effectively being two colonies. Dispersal is largely north and birds have been seen off Brazil and West Africa. There have been two records in the UK. A 1953 bird (adult female) found on Tiree was a Magnificent until nearly fifty years later it was re-examined and found to be an Ascension Frigatebird. The following year (2013) a live juvenile was recorded on a harbour wall in Argyll.
