BRENT GOOSE Branta bernicla

Known as Brant Goose on Avilist and in the States, there are three subspecies, all of which occur in the UK. Black Brant nigricans, is a fairly common vagrant, and a number of hybrids also occur, often with a pure parent. The nominate is bernicla, Dark-bellied Brent Goose, commonest in Britain, most Pale-bellied winter in Ireland. There is also a form which is not formally recognised, Grey-bellied Brant, which may be a stable hybrid, but more research is necessary.
