An immature bird taken in the Atlantic Ocean shows how far some albatrosses range. Unless recently fledged, immature plumages are rarely seen close to the natal islands. The black "thumbnail" between body and leading edge of the wing, diagnostic of cauta albatrosses, shows well here.
